Sigma is a leading experience design and development agency, with a second larger office in Macclesfield. In February 2017, Sigma relocated their Cambridge office to the BioData Innovation Centre on Campus.

At Sigma, we research, design, develop and support information-rich websites, intranets, portals and apps that add genuine business value and bring people together.

Our projects can be broad ranging, with close collaborations between both offices. Some of them include university websites and application systems, clinical trials and data analysis platforms, software used by emergency services, energy use dashboards, and improving access to online healthcare services. In the Cambridge office, although we work across a number of industries and with a wide variety of clients – such as the BBC, Sport England and Min Pension – we have a particular focus on the health and life sciences sector.

We are part of the Sigma group, a 3000 strong IT services company based in Sweden, with offices throughout the world. The UK team is the centre of excellence for experience design.

Our core services include
  • User research
  • User Experience (UX) and service design
  • Data driven design, analytics and Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO)
  • Web, application and digital product development
  • Information architecture
  • Content strategy and management
  • Service management and support
  • User Experience design training

With a strong research aspect, we typically start by discovering what we can about users and other stakeholders, seeking to articulate problems, goals and needs, identify assumptions and define criteria for success. We work with our clients to develop and deliver viable solutions, making the most of our expertise in accessibility, psychology, interaction design, and usability engineering. In many cases, we continue our relationship by providing maintenance and support.

Our people

Our Cambridge team has grown considerably in the past year and boasts a wide range of disciplines, including user experience, design, development and business management. We are almost at capacity in our current BIC office as we look forward to welcoming our seventh team member, Lou Shackleton, come mid-July 2017.

Francis Rowland, Cambridge team leader, is a prominent UX researcher & designer who joined us from the EBI, having a background in design and innovation across a range of complex scientific domains. Also in the UX team, Elizabeth Buie joined us in August 2016, returning to industry whilst finishing her PhD in design research.

Interaction designer, Steve O’Connor is part of our creative team and works on a variety of projects. He likes to solve problems and find the best solutions – be they digital or not; he also heads up Cam Creatives, Cambridgeshire’s largest creative network group.

Our business development is expertly handled by Jennifer Fuller, with responsibilities for marketing and campaigning to prospective clients, identifying and securing new business, and managing client accounts.

Our newest Cambridge recruits include production assistant, Clare Reucroft and front-end developer, Jason Dumont.

Clare recently relocated from the Macclesfield office and looks forward to contributing to the management processes and planning campus events in the Cambridge office. Jason recently graduated from UCLAN with a 1st Class Honours in BSc Wed Design & Development and has a particular interest in data visualisation.

Moving to the BioData Innovation Centre

We were delighted to be accepted as residents in the BioData Innovation Centre and be amongst a number of dynamic and innovative neighbours in the health and life sciences industry.

We chose this location because as a company we have a strong interest in research and development, our team have a passion for helping and improving innovative ventures that help the wider community, and we are well aware that the Wellcome Genome Campus is a hub for people and organisations that share this interest.

Our presence in Cambridge also extends our existing relationships within this sector, including clients such as the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), the Sanger Institute, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, neglected tropical disease team at the University of Warwick, and the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium.
With this move onto Campus, we look forward to building new and enhancing existing relationships, as well as welcoming more talent into the team.
