We recycle office and kitchen waste and segregate over 10 different types of waste on Campus to improve the recycling rates at the waste disposal sites. Our aim is to minimise the use of all consumable materials and use renewable and recyclable materials where possible.
Staff are encouraged to not use personal bins on Campus, bins are placed in communal areas with stacks of recycling bins, or larger recycling bins in the catering areas. The Scientific areas also segregate waste into a number of different waste classifications so that the waste can be disposed of appropriately.
We have two dedicated waste teams on Campus who look after the office waste and laboratory waste.
All communal areas segregate waste at source into:
- General waste
- Biodegradable
- Mixed paper
- Household plastics
- Confidential paper
- Glass, tins and cardboard can be left near the bins to be recycled by the cleaning and waste teams
The Catering areas segregate waste at source into:
- General waste
- Biodegradable
- Plastics
- Metal cans
Future Plans
The Wellcome Genome Campus has plans for further development and expansion of its facilities. The plans for the Campus build on exceptionally high quality research. Once complete, the Campus will be firmly established as an international centre for scientific, business, cultural and educational activities flowing from genomes and computation biology (biodata).
